Every make-up artist, from beginner to veteran, knows that success in the industry means doing an excellent job on a diverse portfolio of skin tones. Having flexibility, versatility, and the passion for inclusivity are key ingredients one must bring to the chair.
With the above values in mind, Stepping Up Creatives, a workshop hub operated by make-up professionals for make-up professionals, created a brand new and much-anticipated course aimed at expanding one’s skillset into working with BIPOC actors and actresses. They have named this course Color Theory and Corrective Make-Up for People of Color.
Read on to find out the reasons that we believe this course is a must-attend for anyone who plans to succeed in the industry.
REASON ONE: HOSTED BY ZABRINA MATIRU
Zabrina is a make-up artist specializing in film and editorial make-up design. She is known for her work on Supernatural, Lost In Space, Sucker Punch, and Watchmen. Through all aspects of her profession, she embodies her global perspective on racial relations, ethnic standards of beauty, and a rich understanding and appreciation of pigment and texture.
“As a make-up artist, this really adds to the layer of empathy I bring to my work.”, she stated. “I strive to make every single person I work with to feel seen and heard as a beautiful, unique individual.”
Being an educator of Stepping Up Creatives, Zabrina aims to train professional make-up artists to improve their practice when it comes to deeper skin tones. By doing so, she hopes to help elevate BIPOC actors and actresses’ confidence and create an unforgettable make-up experience for them as well.
REASON TWO: A SELECTION OF CLASSES THAT ARE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH IATSE LOCAL 891.
IATSE LOCAL 891 is a union that represents the thousands of skilled technicians behind motion picture productions in Vancouver.
They strive to help each member grow beyond the usual borders, and they are collaborating with Stepping Up Creatives’ to bring the Color Theory and Corrective Make-Up for People of Color class to British Columbia.
This class has been taught internationally and garnered an outstanding reception where it has been offered, and this time, the class will be taught together with the IATSE LOCAL 891 Union’s Make-Up Department.
REASON THREE: IT IS SUPPORTED BY POISE BEVERLY HILLS
Of course, a good course can only succeed with good tools. POISE Beverly Hills was among the professional make-up brands whose products and equipment were chosen to be utilized by the highly skilled professionals at this course.
POISE has the rich palettes needed in mixing hues and creating harmonious color combinations for the art of Color Theory. Their unique High-Definition Corrective Make-Up blends naturally into the flow and purpose of the course.
Additionally, POISE is known as one of most inclusive brands in the business. With its products made to match a wide variety of skin tones, the corrective technique of using light and dark shades to highlight and contour features creates better balances and proportion that bring out the best in whoever they are being applied on.
This commitment to helping develop the professional makeup industry is a key value in POISE’s branding and is also in tune with Zabrina’s own values.
Zabrina believes that to have a successful make-up career in film and television, it is important for make-up artists to pursue diversity and representation within those communities.
“Ultimately, I want anyone who works with me to understand that the make-up trailer and my make-up chair are a direct reflection of myself.”, she passionately said. “What you can expect from me –warmth, enthusiasm, and full acceptance.”
